Bandai 1/144 HG Abyss Gundam

ZAFT's amphibious heavy assault suit, with a mobile armour transformation

The ZGMF-X31S Abyss Gundam is one of the second-stage machines from Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Destiny, an amphibious heavy assault mobile suit built for close-range firepower. This High Grade 1/144 kit captures its bulky, cannon-heavy silhouette and its signature ability to shift into a mobile armour form.

Build difficulty

This is a Skill Level 2 build on the Mecha Express scale. Snap-fit, no glue and no paint required. It's an older SEED-era kit with a straightforward parts count, so it's an approachable build, with the transformation being the main point of interest rather than any real difficulty. Expect a relaxed couple of hours on the bench.

Technical highlights

The Abyss transforms into a mobile armour form through a partial parts swap. ABS is used through the transformation joints and the larger armour sections so they hold together during the conversion and deployment. The backpack beam cannons articulate to match the suit's poses from the show, and the kit uses foil stickers to fill the finer colour details.

What makes this kit special

  • Mobile armour transformation. A partial parts swap converts the suit into its mobile armour form.
  • Articulated backpack cannons. The large beam cannons move to match the suit's firing poses.
  • ABS-reinforced conversion. ABS through the transformation points keeps the armour sections secure during the swap.
  • Snap-fit construction. No glue or paint required to reach a presentable finish.

What to watch for

This is an older 2005 mould, and there is limited recent reviewer discussion of it. The notes below are honest general guidance for a kit of its era rather than a list of reported faults.

  • It's an older 2005 kit. Articulation and colour separation are more modest than a current HG, and it leans on foil stickers for detail. It still builds into a solid representation of the suit.
  • The image shown is the retail box artwork. Built-example photos are being sourced. What you receive is the unbuilt snap-fit kit.

Build notes

No glue required, this is a snap-fit kit. A basic Gunpla tool kit (sharp side cutters or nippers, a hobby knife for clean-up and a panel line marker) is recommended though not essential. Recommended age 8 and over. No batteries required.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.
