Series Assembly Guide FAQ

Bandai 1/100 RE/100 MSN-04II Nightingale

Char's colossal Nightingale, in 1/100 scale

The MSN-04II Nightingale is the novel-version design that sits alongside the Sazabi as Char Aznable's final mobile suit, and in RE/100 form it is a genuine centrepiece. This is a big, deep-red kit dominated by its enormous sculpted funnel binders, and it captures the sheer bulk of the design at a size and price well below a full Master Grade.

Build difficulty

This is a Skill Level 2 build on the Mecha Express scale. The RE/100 (Reborn One Hundred) line is built to give you Master Grade-scale presence without a full inner frame, so the assembly is more straightforward than an MG despite the size. Snap-fit, no glue and no paint required. It's a satisfying weekend build with a lot of large, rewarding parts.

Technical highlights

The headline is scale. The Nightingale's funnel binders, propellant tanks and vernier nozzles are all reproduced as large moulded assemblies, giving the finished kit a wide, imposing footprint. The RE/100 engineering keeps the part count sensible for the size by using simplified internal structure rather than a full frame, while retaining the sharp surface detail the design is known for. Marking stickers finish the Neo Zeon accents.

What makes this kit special

  • Master Grade-scale presence. A full 1/100 Nightingale with a commanding shelf footprint, without the complexity or cost of an MG.
  • Enormous funnel binders. The signature sculpted binders, propellant tanks and vernier nozzles are the centrepiece of the design.
  • Full weapon loadout. Mega beam rifle, beam tomahawk and a shield.
  • Simplified RE/100 build. No full inner frame, so it goes together more easily than a Master Grade of this size.
  • Snap-fit construction. No glue or paint required to reach a presentable finish.

What to watch for

Drawing on builder reviews and community threads (r/Gunpla, YouTube reviews, hobby blogs):

  • It is a display kit more than a poseable one. Reviewers consistently note the RE/100 has limited articulation and no gimmicks, in keeping with the simplified construction. It looks the part on the shelf but does not strike deep action poses.
  • A few parts can need light trimming. Some builders reported minor fit issues on specific parts that were solved with a small trim during assembly.
  • It is large and needs the space. The funnel binders give it a wide footprint, so plan the shelf spot before you build. The kit ships in a big outer box.

Build notes

No glue required, this is a snap-fit kit. A basic Gunpla tool kit (sharp side cutters or nippers, a hobby knife for clean-up and a panel line marker) is recommended though not essential. Recommended age 15 and over. No batteries required.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it need paint or glue?

No. It's a snap-fit kit, so you can reach a presentable result straight from the box. The RE/100 line uses marking stickers for the finer Neo Zeon detail. Painting and panel lining are optional.

How big is the Nightingale?

It's a large 1/100 kit dominated by its funnel binders, giving it a wide, imposing footprint on the shelf, close to Master Grade scale. The retail box is around 59 x 39 x 13 cm.

What weapons are included?

The Nightingale comes with a mega beam rifle, a beam tomahawk and a shield, plus the sculpted funnel binder, propellant tank and vernier nozzle assemblies.

What is RE/100?

RE/100 (Reborn One Hundred) is Bandai's line for large or complex 1/100 mobile suits that would be difficult as a full Master Grade. It gives you the scale and surface detail with a simplified internal structure, so it's an easier build than an MG of the same size.

Is it good for a newer builder?

Yes, with the caveat that it's a big kit. The build itself is Skill Level 2 and snap-fit, so the technique is beginner-friendly, but set aside more time and bench space than a small HG. It's a rewarding step up in size.
