Bandai 1/144 HGUC RGZ-91 Re-GZ

The Zeta they could actually afford to build

The Zeta Gundam was brilliant and hideously expensive, and its transformation mechanism was the worst offender. So the Federation built the RGZ-91 Re-GZ, short for Refined Gundam Zeta: the same basic idea with the costly transformation stripped out and replaced by a detachable Back Weapon System. Amuro Ray flies it early in Char's Counterattack before moving to the Nu Gundam.

It is the practical, unglamorous answer to a beautiful machine, and that is exactly why people like it.

Build difficulty

A comfortable snap-fit High Grade. Sharply moulded in colour, polycap joints throughout, no glue or paint required. Part count is moderate and nothing is fiddly except the head, which one reviewer flagged as the trickiest section. Fine for a second or third build.

Technical highlights

The B.W.S. is the whole point. Rather than the Zeta's built-in transformation, the Re-GZ docks with a separate Back Weapon System to become Space Fighter mode when it needs the speed, and detaches it when it needs to fight as a mobile suit. The kit does both. Beyond that: the saber racks on the backpack open to store the beam sabers, the grenade launchers on the left forearm slide out, and the beam rifle stows behind the shield when you have it in Space Fighter mode. Foil stickers are included.

I did not find a repeated, independently confirmed fault with this kit. The one specific note worth passing on comes from a build review that flagged the head as the fiddliest part of the assembly, while describing the B.W.S. transformation itself as simple and concluding it is a kit you will not be disappointed by.

One thing to be careful of when researching: there is a later Re-GZ variant sold as a separate release, and reviews of that version describe fit issues that do not apply to this kit. Check which one you are reading about.

Builder tips: slow down on the head assembly and dry-fit before seating parts. Decide early whether you are displaying it in mobile suit or Space Fighter mode, because the rifle stowage and shield arrangement differ between the two. Panel lining does a lot on the large grey surfaces.

Assembly Guide

SKILL LEVEL REQUIRED
Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.
No Cement Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

No Painting Required

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Awesome kit, great extras. Only criticism is that the kit comes with a base so you don't need the second one. The kit also doesn't have the ability to take the blue LED bonus so if you don't have another use for it it is wasted. Luckily, I'm a Gundam tragic so will always have uses for extra bases and lighting kits.

Very rare with fair price

If you were one of the lucky ones that were able to travel to Sydney Gundam Base pop-up in 2025 and queued extremely early (like the first 40 or so) on the first day, probably you were able to grab one of these. Otherwise, the only alternative I would know of is traveling to Japan and being uber lucky of having it still being sold at Gundam bases. Otherwise, it's a second-hand market, and prices will go up. That said, the price was fair, I think it would be similar price as using a dropship service from Japan, with the exception that it's much faster and way more guaranteed you will get proper merchandise. So, Mecha Express, Cam, thank you so much for your store!
