Judau Ashta's Double Zeta
The MSZ-010 ZZ Gundam was the most powerful mobile suit the AEUG deployed in the fight against Neo Zeon. Judau Ashta took it to the front lines of the Gryps Conflict's aftermath and pushed it to its limits across the ZZ campaign. The suit has a reputation in the Gundam fandom that matches that weight β and Hajime Katoki's 2017 redesign gives it the Master Grade it always deserved, released to mark thirty years of Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ.
This is the kit fans voted for. A Gundam.info census in 2016 asked builders which mobile suit should become the next Ver.Ka MG. The ZZ Gundam won with 38.2% of the vote. That context matters when you crack open the box β this is a kit that was built with the community's expectations fully loaded.
Build difficulty
Skill Level 3. This is not a weekend starter project. Seventeen runners, KPS plastic joints, and a full G-Fortress transformation sequence make this a committed build. Builders should expect the level of fit tolerance and instruction detail that Katoki designs are known for β tight, deliberate, and rewarding if you take your time. Set aside several evenings. Have your nippers and a good set of sanding sticks ready. Confident intermediate builders will manage it; beginners should have a few MGs under their belt before attempting this one. No glue required, no paint required β waterslide decals are included and take the panel markings to the next level.
Technical highlights
The transformation is the engineering centrepiece. The ZZ Gundam splits into three components β Core Top, Core Base, and Neo Core Fighter β and each can be displayed independently. The G-Fortress mode combines all three into the ZZ's distinctive mobile armour configuration, complete with deployable landing gears and missile launcher hatches. Two Neo Core Fighters are included so you can have the ZZ in MS mode with a docked Core Fighter while displaying the spare.
The weapons loadout is the ZZ's full arsenal. The Double Beam Rifle mounts the nosecone cockpit and fits both pilot figurines in their respective seats. The two Hyper Beam Sabers mount on the backpack and can be removed as handheld weapons with dedicated saber-grip finger parts. The head-mounted High Mega Cannon β the ZZ's signature long-range weapon β is built into the kit at full scale. Articulation is solid through double-jointed elbows and knees, with the waist rotation limited to around 20 degrees by the transformation mechanics, which is accurate to the suit's real constraints.
What makes this kit special
-
Fan-voted Ver.Ka redesign: the ZZ won a 2016 Gundam.info census with 38.2% of the vote to become the next Ver.Ka MG. Katoki's rework sharpens the original's proportions, adds KPS joint durability, and brings the transformation up to 2017 engineering standards.
-
Full G-Fortress transformation: Core Top, Core Base, and Neo Core Fighter all separate and recombine. Two Neo Core Fighters are included so you can build both docked and undocked configurations simultaneously.
-
Complete weapons package: High Mega Cannon (head-mounted), Double Beam Rifle, two Hyper Beam Sabers, and 21-tube missile launcher hatches with opening covers β the ZZ's full arsenal, nothing held back.
-
Two pilot figures: 1/100 Judau Ashta (standing) and 1/100 Iino Abbav (sitting) are included. Iino fits the nosecone cockpit of the Double Beam Rifle, a detail unique to this kit.
-
Waterslide decals included: full marking sheet in the box. Panel lining and decal application will take the finished kit to display-level detail without any paint.
-
KPS plastic: Katoki's preferred joint material gives the ZZ's transformation joints long-term durability and tight fit without the brittleness of older ABS-only MG kits.

What to watch for
The waist rotation is limited to approximately 20 degrees in any direction. This is a deliberate design consequence of the transformation mechanics, not a build defect. Don't force it β the range is enough for standard MS poses. The backpack is substantial, but one local customer who built this kit noted it stands solidly on its own feet without an Action Base. The finger palm parts require attention during fitting β each weapon has dedicated finger variants and the instruction manual is specific about which grip goes with which weapon. Read the instructions for this one. The waterslide decals add significant time to the build; budget an extra session if you intend to apply the full marking sheet.
Builder tips: Panel line before applying decals. Mark and organise your runners early β 17 runners generates a lot of parts and the colour coding helps. The landing gears on the leg armors and the Double Beam Rifle nosecone are small assemblies with fine tolerances; use tweezers. Topcoat after decals to seal everything.
Build notes
No glue required. Tools recommended: a sharp pair of nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks (600/1000 grit), tweezers, and a Gundam Marker panel liner. Waterslide decal softener is helpful for the marking sheet. Build time estimate: 8-12 hours for the main build, additional time for panel lining and decal application. Recommended age: 15 and over. The kit is not recommended for first-time builders.
