Heero's ride, redesigned by the man himself
The XXXG-01W Wing Gundam is the suit most people who grew up on Toonami actually mean when they say "the Wing Gundam", Heero Yuy's machine from the original After Colony series. This Master Grade brings back Kunio Okawara's original silhouette but rebuilds it through Hajime Katoki's stylistic pass, the same treatment Katoki gave many of Bandai's later MG reissues.
It transforms, it carries a real cockpit reveal, and the proportions are the ones people actually picture.
Build difficulty
A proper Master Grade transformation kit. Snap-fit, moulded in colour, no glue or paint required. The Bird Mode conversion is the main technical challenge, since it involves removing the wrists and working through several linked steps in sequence, but reviewers consistently describe the process as straightforward once you have looked at the diagrams once. Suited to a builder with at least one Master Grade behind them.
Technical highlights
The wing area has an adjustment gimmick that gives it a wide posing range beyond a fixed spread. Transformation to Bird Mode centres the wings and rebalances the front-to-back weight for a proper flight silhouette, with the wrists removed as part of the process. A locking mechanism secures the transformation: cranking the side armour locks the arm shaft base and the waist mobility together, which stabilises Bird Mode rather than leaving it loose. The leg transformation is linked to the knee joint, with the ankle storing into the shin to shorten the overall length. The cockpit hatch opens to reveal a 1/100 scale Heero Yuy figure in his shirt, moulded with genuine detail rather than as an afterthought.
What makes this kit special
-
Katoki-redesigned proportions: the classic silhouette rebuilt through Hajime Katoki's stylistic pass.
-
Genuine Bird Mode transformation: wings centre, wrists remove, and the whole balance shifts for a real flight configuration, not a pose swap.
-
Transformation locking mechanism: cranking the side armour locks the arm and waist together, stabilising Bird Mode.
-
Linked leg transformation: the ankle stores into the shin as the knee bends, shortening the leg for flight mode.
-
Opening cockpit with Heero figure: a detailed 1/100 scale figure of Heero Yuy in his shirt, revealed when the hatch opens.
-
Weapon action gimmicks: the beam rifle barrel folds down and the sabre pops out as its own mechanism.

What to watch for
I did not find a repeated, independently confirmed fault with this specific release. The Bird Mode transformation is the part most builders comment on, and the consensus is that it goes smoothly once you understand the sequence, with the locking mechanism doing real work to keep the flight form stable rather than floppy.
Worth flagging for your own research: a lot of Wing Gundam review content online covers the Proto Zero and Ver.Ka variants, which are different kits with their own quirks. Those reviews are not necessarily describing this release.
Builder tips: read through the transformation diagram once before attempting it live rather than working it out step by step under pressure, since a couple of builders mention initial nerves about part stress. Use the side-armour locking mechanism properly rather than skipping it, since that is what keeps Bird Mode from feeling loose. The cockpit figure is small and rewards a careful hand-paint if you want it to read properly.
