Series Assembly Guide FAQ

Bandai RG 1/144 Wing Gundam - Real Grade Gunpla

Heero Yuy's TV-series Wing Gundam, rebuilt as a Real Grade

This is the XXXG-01W Wing Gundam as it appears in the original Gundam Wing TV series, the mobile suit Heero Yuy flies through the first half of the story. Bandai sculpted it from scratch for the Real Grade line, with an inner frame, a parts-swap Bird Mode and a wing expansion gimmick designed for this release. It belongs on the After Colony shelf next to the other Wing kits.

Build difficulty

Bandai rates this kit 15 and over, and the store lists it as Skill Level 2. It is a full Real Grade inner frame with a transformation, so expect more steps and finer parts than a High Grade. Assembly is snap-fit with no glue. The kit uses under-gates, so nub marks are small once the parts are cut clean.

Technical highlights

The skeleton is moulded in grey KPS, with an Advanced MS Joint at the base of the wings. Colour separation comes from the moulded parts: a white base with blue, red and yellow, and light grey on the waist and legs. The twin eyes, chest search eye and sensors on the shield and rifle are clear green parts, and the included realistic decals are optional for the colour breakup. The chest blocks open out to free the arms, the hip joints slide down for wider leg splits, and the centre of the rear skirt folds out as a landing gear for a parked pose.

What makes this kit special

  • All-new Real Grade moulding: Bandai's own wording is a completely new sculpt of the TV Wing Gundam.
  • Wing expansion gimmick: the overlapping wing feathers separate and fan out, so the silhouette changes from folded to full spread.
  • Bird Mode by parts swap: the head and lower body reverse, the legs fold, and the shield and Buster Rifle mount on the body.
  • Buster Rifle with removable cartridges: pull the barrel out and the cartridges come off, and the grip folds away.
  • Shield with a hidden beam saber: fold the shield and the saber hilt slides out, or take the hilt off as a handheld weapon.
  • Torso and shoulder gimmicks: built-in movement for the rifle and beam saber stances from the show.
  • Action Base adapter in the box: display it in mobile suit mode or Bird Mode.

What's in the box

  • XXXG-01W Wing Gundam runners and instruction manual
  • Buster Rifle with three cartridges
  • Shield
  • Beam saber blade, plus one spare blade
  • Hand parts: three types each for left and right, plus one weapon-holding hand (right)
  • Action Base adapter part
  • Realistic decal sheet

Compatible accessories

No display base is included with the kit, only the adapter part. For flight poses and Bird Mode, pair the Wing Gundam with the Bandai Action Base 2 - Display Stand for 1/144 Scale Gunpla or the Bandai Action Base 5 - Compact 1/144 Gunpla Display Stand, the two stands builders name for this kit.

What to watch for

Builder write-ups from Japan and Korea are generally positive on this kit, with a handful of points worth knowing before you build. Each point below comes from one or two reviewers, so treat them as things to check rather than faults every kit has.

  • Front skirt armour: reviewers report it can pop off when the legs are lifted or spread wide. Swing the side armour out of the way before posing wide stances.
  • Knee area: one reviewer notes the light grey knee armour comes loose unless the knee armour is fully seated, and another says a small part just below the knee is the one piece prone to falling off.
  • Chest search eye: the round clear green part in the centre of the chest is reported to fall out easily, so keep an eye on it when handling.
  • Back weight: with the wings on the back, the kit can tip backwards in some poses. One reviewer notes that adjusting the wing angle steadies it, and the Action Base adapter is there for display.

Builder tips: the Gunpla Wiki suggests a water-based topcoat if you seal the kit, because it contains PP parts, and panel lining with Gundam markers lifts the finer details.

Build notes

Snap-fit, no glue. You will need nippers and a hobby knife, and Gundam markers are worth having for panel lining. The decals are optional because the colour separation holds without them. Bandai rates the kit 15 and over. Bird Mode is a parts swap, so allow time for the first transformation.

Assembly Guide

Skill Level.2 Basic modeling skills are required. Parental supervision may be required for younger children. These kits are generally suitable for beginner builders. A basic set of modeling tools are required including nippers, hobby knife, sanding sticks/paper, file, and tweezers. No glue is needed for the general assembly. Parts will need to be removed by using a pair of nippers and cutting the part away from the runner. Parts may require clean-up where they were removed from the runner.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are a snap together assembly and do not need plastic cement to complete. We always recommend having some plastic cement handy as a part of your modeler's tool kit. If you prefer to fix your model in a particular pose then plastic cement will work. Plastic cement is also perfect to use if a joint is loose. Apply plastic cement in a single thin layer and allow it to dry completely before test fitting. Re-apply more cement if necessary.

Gunpla (plastic model kits) are designed to be built and displayed without the need for painting. Kits are molded in different colours replicating the colours of the actual mecha from the Mecha series. A technique called colour separation, where multiple parts of the model are molded in different colours on the same sprue is also used. Mecha kits often include stickers or water-slide decals that can be applied to the model to enhance its appearance. Some Gunpla kits come with pre-painted parts or parts with pre-applied details, such as metallic or translucent finishes.

Many modelers still choose to paint their kits to customize and add further detail. Painting allows for more creativity and personalization, enabling modelers to achieve unique effects, weathering, and colour schemes that may not be available out of the box. However, the kits are designed to be enjoyable and visually appealing even without painting, making them accessible to a wide range of hobbyists.
